WHEREAS, law enforcement officers steadfastly provide an extraordinary level of
service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, under often difficult and dangerous
circumstances; and
WHEREAS, law enforcement offICers and their loved ones must live with the
possibility of life-threatening violence every day they are on the job; and
WHEREAS, as a consequence of this danger, many law enforcement officers have
made the supreme sacrifice for their communities; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of courageous public safety officers lost their lives in the
tragedies of September 11, 2001; and
WHEREAS, law enforcement officers and grateful citizens pause every year to honor
the memory of these officers; and
WHEREAS, on Friday, May 24'" at 7:00 p.m. in Bayview Park there will.be a Law
Enforcement Memorial ceremony to honor those who have given their lives as Law
Enforcement Officers.
NOW, THEREFORE, by virtue of the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe
County, Florida, I, CHARLES 'SONNY' MCCOY, do proclaim the Week of May 19"'_ 25"',
2002 as
LAW ENFORCEMENT MEMORIAL WEEK
in the 'Southemmost City of the Continental United States" and urge aU citizens, residents
and visitors of Monroe County to remember those law enforcement officers who fell holding
the thin, blue line that stands between us and lives of fear' and anarchy.
