Item D29 BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: June 19,2002 Division: Public Safety Bulk Item: Yes -L No Department: Fire Rescue AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval for Automatic Aid Agreement to be executed by County Mayor with the elimination or strike-through of the names of those entities that elected not to participate in the written agreement. Entities not executing are: City of Key West, City of Marathon, Islamorada Village of Islands, The Conch Key Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc., and Key Largo Volunteer Fire/Rescue Department, Inc. ITEM BACKGROUND: Automatic Aid or Closest Unit Response is a system whereby fire service providers assist neighboring providers in controlling or extinguishing fires or other emergencies when a quicker response may be provided due to being closer or more available. This practice is already being successfully carried out throughout the county, however it is necessary to have an executed agreement in place. Therefore, an agreement was prepared and routed to all twelve (12) fire service providers within Monroe County requesting their execution. Seven (7) of the twelve (12) entities executed, of the remaining five, three elected not to participate in the written agreement at this time, one did not respond after several requests, and the Conch Key Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, Inc. dissolved the corporation and fire service is now being provided directly by the county. However, operationally all of the entities participate in the provision of Automatic Aid or Closest Unit Response. On April 17, 2002, when presented to the Board for approval, it was not specified that only seven (7) fire service providers executed the Agreement. We were directed by the County Attorney to send back to the Board specifying the non-participating entities and request County Mayor to execute same. PREVIOUS REVELANT BOCC ACTION: On April 17, 2002 the Board approved and authorized execution of an Automatic Aid Agreement with various fire service providers within Monroe County. That agenda item wording was not specific as to the participating entities. CONTRACT/AGREEMENT CHANGES: This agreement is between Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida and seven (7) fire service providers within Monroe County, not twelve (12).
