In May of 1989, when the Branch Manager position opened at the Islamorada Branch Library, he made the move to Community Services, and has held that position since then. During Jim's tenure at Islamorada, he has overseen the growth at that Library in patronage, circulation, and collection, as well as expansion of the building itself, in the addition of a community meeting room. The transition of the Library into the computer age has brought new challenges, but Jim's determination to learn new techniques have enabled him to meet and master these changes in technology. Jim's own interest in Florida Keys history has been a driving force in his program of developing an outstanding Keys History collection in the Islamorada Library. Much of his vacation time is spent in research in Washington, D.C., where he searches out documents and historical data to build up this growing resource. Historians and researchers from all over the country look to Jim and his expertise for information and direction. As an "avocational archaeologist" Jim also participates regularly in local digs, and is a respected board member of the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy. He additionally serves on Monroe County's Historic Preservation Commission. He also has been involved with various community groups throughout his time with the Library. It is in the service aspect of his work, though, that Jim really shines. He is dedicated to giving the best possible service to all library patrons, and his leadership in this inspires his staff at Islamorada to do the same. He is well- regarded by his staff, patrons, and peers throughout the Library system, and his fifteen years of service have been a great credit to Monroe County.
