AGENDA ITEM WORDING: A Public Hearing to consider adoption of an ordinance amending

ITEM BACKGROUND: The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) at its
May 19, 2021 regular meeting discussed increasing the parking fines on county roads to deter illegal
parking. The current noncriminal civil penalty for parking violations is $20.00 and has been at

In consideration of the information presented after discussion, the BOCC directed for staff to draft
an ordinance and to hold this public hearing to consider adoption of an ordinance to increase the
noncriminal parking penalty from $20.00 to $200.00 in an effort to deter parking violations from
occurring on county "No Parking" areas.
Staff currently post"No Parking" signs on county roads as approved by resolution by the BOCC and
will include the noncriminal civil penalty amount moving forward and will update signs already
erected to include the noncriminal civil penalty on signage.
F.S. 316.1967 provides for the fine amount to be designated by county ordinance.
Section 25-27 of the Monroe County Code, which sets the noncriminal civil penalty for parking
violations, will be amended by this ordinance to designate the fine as $200.00.
