WHEREAS. the old Seven Mile Bridge (hereinofter the "Bridge-) is the only access for motor
vehicles to Pigeon JCey; and
WHEREAS, the weight restrictions imposed by the Florida Ocpcll"t1Mn1' of Trcwporfatlon
(hereinafter "FOOT") on the Bridge prohibit the use of emergency vehicles for proper response for medic.ol
and fire rescue services to Pigeon KEy. thus posing serious risks to the health, safety end welfare of persons
Oh said Island; and
WHEREAS. the Bridge is a historic landmark and is a valued tourist attraction of Monroe County and
especially the City of Marathon: and
WHEREAS, the Bridge is also a port of the Florida Keys CNerse.as Heritage Trail; and
WHEREAS. weight restrictions imposed by FDOT may restrict or prohibit the use of the Bridge as a
natural spectator for loc.ol boat races, as Q tourist attraction. and use for recreational purposes such as
jogging and walking; ond
WHEREAS. the lock of further preventative maintenance and structural repairs to the Bridge will
eventuolty cause the Bridge to be dosed; and
WHEREAS. the loss of the Bridge will have a significcmt negative impact on the City of Marathon and
the County of Monroe; now, therefore

Section 2.
The County requests that fDOT immediately cond~ct further studies to determine if
the existing weight restriction on the Bridge can be: elevated.
Sechon 3.
The County reqUC$1's that FDOT, the Florida Deportment of Environmental Protection,
and the City of Marathon take immediate steps to establish with Monroe County a c;ooperative plan to
restore the Bridge to a safe condition, capable of bearing weight loads consistent with the needs of Pigeon
key, including bearing traffic, especially emergency vehicles, and retaining its status Q$ a historical landmark
and tourist attraction. as well os use for rccreotional purposes.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF MARATHON, FLORIDA; REQUESTING THAT THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
CONDUCT FURTHER STUDIES ON THE OLD SEVEN
MILE BRIDGE TO DETERMINE IF STATE IMPOSED
WEIGHT RESTRICTIONS ARE VALID; REQUESTING
THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION
BEGIN PLANS TO RESTORE THE BRIDGE; AND
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS. the Old Seven Mile Bridge (the "Bridge") is the only vehicular link to
Pigeon Key; and
WHEREAS, the weight restrictions imposed by the Florida Department of
Transportation (the "FOOT") on the Bridge prohibit the proper response of medical and fire
rescue services to Pigeon Key, thus posing serious health, safety and welfare risks; and
WHEREAS, the Bridge is an historic lan~k and is one of the City of Marathon's (the
"City") most valued tourist attractions; and
WHEREAS, the Bridge is also one of the City's most valued recreational resource and is
part of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail; and
WHEREAS, the weight restrictions imposed by the FOOT will restrict or prohibit the
use of the Bridge as a natural spectator area for local boat races, as a tourist attraction and its use
for recreational purposes; and
WHEREAS, the lac~ of further preventative maintenance and structural repairs by the
FDOT to the Bridge will eventually cause the Bridge to be closed; and
WHEREAS, the loss of the Bridge will have a significant negative impact on the City.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF MARATHON, MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, THAT:

Section 1.
Recitals. The above recitals are true and correct and are incorporated
herein by this reference.
Section 2.
Studies on the Brid2e. The City requests that the FOOT immediately
conduct further studies on the Bridge to determine if the existing weight restrictions can be
elevated.
Section 3.
Restoration. The City requests that the FOOT, Monroe County and the
Florida Depamnent of Environmental Protection and City begin immediate cooperative plans (0
restore the Bridge to a safe condition, capable of bearing weight loads consistent with the needs
of Pigeon Key, past traffic load, its status as an hiS~iCaJ landmark and tourist attraction, and its
use for .-ecreational purposes.
Section 4.
Effective Date. This Resolution shall become effective immediately
upon its adoption.
