AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
Approval of an agreement between Monroe County and Florida International University to continue water
quality monitoring in the Little Venice area.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The Monroe County 2010 Comprehensive Plan requires that the County monitor water quality improvements
that result from the improvement of wastewater facilities. The Little Venice Wastewater Improvement area was
chosen as the principal monitoring site for at least three reasons, it is a hotspot area, it contains a large number
of cesspits, and it is the first wastewater project to move forward toward completion. Monitoring is on going,
supported by funds from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Continuing monitoring will be funded by the
County using grant funds provided by the Florida Department of Community Affairs. Two years of monitoring
is required prior to completion of the wastewater improvement project at Little Venice. Monitoring will
continue to test for water quality improvement after the project is completed.
