She has served as Board Chairman for her entire term of service since then, seldom missing a meeting for over twenty years. Her years of service have been memorable for her energy, enthusiasm, and wholehearted support for the Library and its needs-and she has never been bashful about expressing her feelings. Every County Administrator and all the Commissioners have come to recognize her voice on the phone when an issue concerning the Library is coming up for BOCC discussion. They have also all come to acknowledge and respect her integrity and ethics when controversial matters have arisen. Alice Skinger has been outstanding in her support for Library advocacy- and she is not a person to simply give lip service-she has been a woman of action when she sees the need, and her actions over the past twenty-one years are proof of her love of libraries and her absolute conviction of the need for a good Library system in Monroe County. Under her guidance and oversight, the Library has expanded in every community that it serves, with new buildings in Key Largo and Marathon, a new branch in Big Pine Key, and expanded facilities in Key West and Islamorada, all within her term of office. The patronage has grown as well during that time, to over 45,000 registered Library cardholders and nearly half a million visitors to the five branches last year alone. The Library and the entire County owe a huge debt of gratitude to Alice Skinger for her many efforts on behalf of the Monroe County Library and for the years of dedication and energy that she has given to us. For the entire County, we say "Thank you, Alice-you'll be a tough act to follow."
