Division: Growth Manaaement
Department: Marine Resources
AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval of the use of Boating Improvement Funds for the
removal, transport, and disposal of marine debris Keys wide (to include marine debris
located on dry land and in nearshore waters).
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Marine Resources Department-Marine Projects Section
assists other agencies/departments (F.W.C.C., U.S.C.G., F.K.N.M.S., Monroe County
Code Enforcement, and the general public) with funding assistance to transport and
dispose of marine debris. This is a cooperative effort for marine debris to be disposed
of legally. Local Marine Contractors assist with the removal and transport of this marine
debris to County disposal sites at reduced costs. Marine debris can consist of a variety
of items (boat hulls, trailers, engines, ect.). These removals are handled on a case by
case basis and individual bills not to exceed $1,000 each (with the exception of
payments to the Monroe County Solid Waste Department for monthly billing of dump
fees). This long standing community service encourages proper and legal disposal. The
approval of these expenditures is at the request of the Finance Director for auditing
purposes.
