Your program, "Rural Health Dental Sealant Program," has been chosen a winncr of a 2003 Acts of Caring Award. TIlere were many excellent program~ that applied for awards this year. Your program was selected because of its accomplishments and the successful partnership between community volunteers and the county government. NACo is honored to have the opponunity to recognize your hard work and dedication. A complete list of the award winners is enclosed for your information. The awards ceremony will be held on Wednesday, April 9 at 8:30 a.m. in Room 902 of the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Breakfast will be served at the ceremony, whieh will end at approximately 10 a.m. Wc will contact members of Congress who represent your state and county and invite them to the breakfast ceremony. I encourage you to invite them as well. Because it is a breakfast ceremony, we are limited by space and funding. You may bring up to four officials, volunteers or staff to the ceremony. Please let NACo Public Affairs Director Tom Goodman know who and how many officials and staff from your county will attend the awards ceremony. Florida 33041-4966 Dental Sealant Program Interim Report - 2003 The third series of dental sealant activities is in progress with Miami Children's Hospital Dental Center, The Monroe County Health Department and The Rural Health Network having visited Key Largo School and Stanley SWitlik thus far. In addition to providing the sealants, and oral exams, fluoride varnish was applied on each tooth of each student that was seen during this program. A total of 68 referrals were made from the newty seen students. This amounts to 59% of the children seen. It is not known how many of those students will actually be seen by a dentist within the coming months. Efforts have been made to have the Upper Keys children seen at Miami Children's Hospital Dental Center, while two dental care weekends were recently conducted at the Rural Health Dental Clinic wherein 41 of the children with the most critical dental need were seen. With Key Largo School being the site of the Pilot Program for Dental Sealants a total of 67 re-checks* were completed. No ae.lants W8I'8 found to have failed. *Note: It has been determined that approximately 25% of the children previously participating in this program'have moved from the Florida Keys. The continued partnership with the Monroe County Health Department, Miami Children's Hospital and Rural Health Network has been one filled with increased dental care for the children of Monroe County.
