WHEREAS, the County of Monroe is celebrating the 25"' year of our Older American Program,
the Monroe County Senior Community Service Employment Program in cooperation with the National
Council on the Aging, Inc., the South Florida Workforce and the U. S. Department of Labor; and
WHEREAS, individuals aged fifty-five and over are a major national resource, constitute a
substantial population of the United States at the present time, and will constitute a larger percentage of the
population in future decades; and
WHEREAS, such individuals who have made continuing contributions to the national welfare
should be encouraged to remain in or resume career and voluntary roles that utilize their skills, strengths
and wisdom; and
WHEREAS, career opportunities reaffrrm the dignity, self-worth and independence of older
individnls by encouraging them to make decisions and to act upon those decisions, by tapping their
rescurces, experience and knowledge, and by enabling them to contribute to society; and
WHEREAS, the operating Title V of the Older Americans Act of 1965 has demonstrated that
older workers are extremely capable in a wide variety of job roles; and
WHEREAS, while age discrimination still exists, more and more employers are recognizing the
value of older workers, their action is to be commended; and
WHEREAS, The Federal government has initiated efforts to hasten elimination of an unrealistic
bias against older workers and to point out the many contributions of the older worker to our national well
being.
NOW, THEREFORE, by the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I do
hereby proclaim May <003 as
Older Americans Month
I would like to urge all employers of this area to give special consideration to the skills and qualifications
of these men and women fifty-five' and older. I encourage those public officials who are responsible for job
placement, counseling, timing and retraining services to intensity, throughout this month and throughout
the entire year their efforts to assist older workers to find suitable jobs and training opportunities. This is a
community wide effort that should engage the active support of our institutions.
