Approximately 11 years ago, I was elected Vice-President of the Key Largo School Purenl Teacher Assoclatron. Among the many challenges the Board taced, the replacement of ell the dilapidaled playground eQuipment wtth new slate of the art equipment was the most dlff!C\,It. I became invol"ed in this project because I wanted to insure that every child would have eqUAl access to our playground equipment. I did not want to see a handicapped child segregated from hiS friends. We designed a playground thaI was accessible to everyone with transfer $tathms and pull up bars and ramps which would allow children with upper bOdy strength to play al.)ngside their classmates. We installed a swing sel with a wheelchair accessible swing, which would allow 8 handicapped child 10 ride right next fo his friends. The finel stage of our construction project InvolveCl connecting the playground to the school buildings with handicapped acceSSIble sidewalks. AUhough our funds were exhausted. Ilcnaw that our job was not complete until we enabled the wheelchair bound child access to the equipment. So, we decided to sell <;onorete. Hundreds of aaults, chllaren and businesses turned out to place Iheir names on the concrete. The project was e success and Is stili st3flding lodclY. I learned many things from this experience. It is one of the tllings I am most proud of. I am sorry for the delay. I hope this information is helpful 10 you.
