Key West, FL 33040 Dear Ms. Haskell, I am writing to indicate my interest in the opening on the Cultural Umbrella Committee of the Tourist Development Council. My area of expertise in the arts is literary, however, my interest in aesthetic projects is not limited to literature and writing. I have been a resident of Marathon for three years and reside in TDC District 3. My 25- year career in writing and publishing spans diverse levels of art and craft _ from poetry, short fiction, book reviews and Shakespeare criticism to newspaper journalism, magazine editing, technical writing, and genre novel writing. I am interested in the many ways we individually and culturally transmit our stories and communicate our thinking. As a volunteer, I have participated in civic, charitable, education and arts organizations for more than two decades. Notable volunteer work includes service on the board of directors of Miami Book Fair International. As a board member, I coordinated an annual month-long showcase of local writers, organized writer workshops, and helped facilitate panels of readers and speakers at the Book Fair's two-day Congress of Authors. Volunteer efforts here in Monroe County have centered on school readiness services for children birth to 5; I have served as the chair of the Monroe County School Readiness Coalition for the past year. The Coalition is a local partnership functioning with state mandates and responsibility for oversight of more than $3 million in subsidized child care funding for income-eligible families and children at risk. I am currently teaching credit Courses in English, creative writing and film appreciation at Florida Keys Community College, Middle Keys and Upper Keys Centers. I view teaching as a creative collaboration with students and as an essential role in connecting communities of learners, especially in the challenging geography and socio-economic dynamics of The Keys. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at 305-743-0250. A curriculum vitae is attached.
