Per the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Public Law 105-220, nominations must come from local business organizations or trade aSllociations. Per the Workforce Investment Act of 1998, Public Law 105-220, August 7, 1998, nominees must come from local education agencies; per SFETC decision, the two local education agencies to represent the Region's community colleges and school districts would be Miami-Dade Community College and the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, based in part on prior attendance at the Board when both the Miami-Dade County and Monroe County institutions were included on the Board. Six (6) current Board members continue to represent the City of Miami until they are re-appointed or replaced with new appointees. " ..... This was during a SFETC Conference call while I was at the SFRC&D Meeting in Homestead. This means we can now start looking for a motivated SFW Board replacement to represent the County from the Private Sector. I would be appreciative if you would notify the Commissioners of this fact and perhaps have them nominate a good visible, responsive, and active replacement candidate for BOCC confirmation perhaps in August. Bruce Waite and I are also looking for a good candidate as well. If you desire, I will notify them directly of the authorized change so we may now move to fill our third seat for SFW Board active and visible representation in Miami from the Keys Private Sector. Respectfully, Jim Malloch 7/3/03 lM E M 0 RAN l> U M I To: Board of County Commissioners From: James L. Roberts, County Administrator Date: July 7, 2003 RE: Appointment to the South Florida Workforce Board Mr. Malloch has reported that the City of Miami was interested in obtaining a labor seat on the-South Florida Workforce Board. As you know, Monroe County had a labor representative who has resigned and moved out of the area. It would appear that the County's interest would be better served by a strong private sector representative who has the time and the motivation to advocate the County's interests and maintain a strong and consistent presence on the Board. Therefore, it would be appreciated if Commissioners would consider who the appointment might be. This will require some time each month at meetings in the Miami area and coordination with Mr. Malloch. We receive funding through the South Florida Workforce Board for our One- Stop Centers and of course subsidies for the Upper Keys Bus System. This year we received a grant reduction for our One-Stop Centers in conjunction with overall Federal reductions to the SFWB. If you will kindly let me know your thoughts about a replacement we can have an agenda item for consideration at the meeting in August. . If you have any questions, please let me know. -./~~ James L.
