AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
Approval to advertise requesting bids for equipment and tackle for 166 additional moorings for the expansion of
the City of Marathon mooring field and to pay for 39 moorings recently installed ($16,017.40)
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The City of Marathon has been expanding the size of their mooring field in Boot Key Harbor. Much of the
development of the mooring field concept was developed by Monroe County prior to turning over the marina
and bay bottom to the City of Marathon. The City has requested County funding to assist with the purchase
and/or installation of moorings. This is a priority for the City at this time and for the next year or two as they
obtain permits and complete mooring field management plans.
The County has grant funds (National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF)) acquired specifically for the
purpose of establishing mooring fields, which need to be utilized before the grant expires. Thus, the request
from the City to assist in the expansion of the mooring field at this time is advantageous to using up remaining
funds. Expenses for the recent mooring installation ($16,017.40) and new mooring equipment will be paid
using the NFWF grant.

Mr. George Garrett
Department of Marine Resources
2798 Overseas Highway, Suite 420
Marathon, Florida 33050
Dear George:
This letter is to formally request the assistance of the County, Department of
Marine Resources, for reimbursement in part or whole, of the cost for the recent
installation of Phase II of the Boot Key Harbor mooring field. The cost of the
project for the 39 moorings was $16,017.40. The field was completed on October
10, 2003 and combined with the initial phase, brought the total number of
moorings to 64. Attached are copies of the invoices and checks made out to the
contractor, American Underwater Contractors, Inc.
We understand that with our tight budgets this may not be possible, however, we
will appreciate any consideration upon this request. If you have any questions or
need additional information, please contact Harry DeLashmutt of my staff at (305)
289-4114. Thank you.
Sincerely,
