ITEM BACKGROUND: Clean Florida Keys and the Ocean Conservancy have a long partnership in cleaning the shoreline areas of the Florida Keys. Each September these partners sponsor a shoreline cleanup, which this year will be held on 18 September 2004. APPROVED BY: County Atty --X- DOCUMENTATION: Included -X- To Follow Not Required DISPOSITION: AGENDA ITEM NO.: --IC/ BC040920 8/27/2004 8:09 AM Marine Resources RESOLUTION NO. 2004 A RESOLUTION OF THE MONROE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS APPLAUDING THE OCEAN CONSERVANCY & CLEAN FLORIDA KEYS FOR THEIR EFFORTS IN ORGANIZING AND CARRYING OUT A KEYS- WIDE BEACH CLEANUP TO TAKE PLACE ON 18 SEPTEMBER, 2004 WHEREAS, the Florida Keys have diversity of coastal resources including fringing mangroves, saltmarshes, seagrass meadows, nearshore patch reefs, offshore barrier reefs, and sandy beaches; and WHEREAS, the coast has provided the Keys with a rich scenic, cultural, and historical heritage and constitutes a national recreational and economic resource supporting a robust commercial fishing and tourist industry; and WHEREAS, Monroe County is strongly committed to the wise management of its coastline in order to ensure the natural and economic sustainability of this resource; and WHEREAS, the proper disposal and recycling of solid waste is an important aspect of protecting the Keys' coastal resources and achieving coastal sustainability; and WHEREAS, the Ocean Conservancy has sponsored an annual County and Statewide coastal cleanup in Florida since 1988, and Clean Florida Keys has sponsored the Adopt-A-Shore program since 1994 resulting in the nations' largest coastal cleanup effort; and WHEREAS, the Ocean Conservancy and Clean Florida Keys is sponsoring a coastal cleanup in the Florida Keys on Saturday 18 September 2004; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS, MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA THAT: o The coastal cleanup efforts of the Ocean Conservancy and Clean Florida Keys critically important to the protection of coastal resources in the Keys; and BC040921 8(27(2004 8:14 AM Marine Resources o The Board and citizens of Monroe County, the Florida Keys, support this laudable effort with the same strength of spirit held by those who organized the cleanup and volunteered their substantial time and energy. o The Board asks that every citizen of Monroe County consider volunteering 2 hours of their time during September or October to help our finned and feathered friends by keeping Monroe County litter free. o Additionally, the Board would like to commend the many businesses in the Keys that donated time and materials to this effort, including the Monroe County Recycling Department, The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, Clean Florida Keys and Keys' solid waste haulers, Keys Sanitary Service, Marathon Garbage Service, Waste Management Inc., BFI Inc., PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners, Monroe County, Florida at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 15th day of September.
