WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great
Chicago Fire of 1871 that tragically killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless.
destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.

WHEREAS, this event changed the way the firefighters and public officials
thought about fire safety.
WHEREAS, on the 40th anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals J
Association of North America (today known as the International Fire Marshals 4
Association), decided that the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire should henceforth
be observed not with festivities, but in a way that would keep the public informed about
the importance of fire prevention.
WHEREAS, in 1920, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire
Prevention Day proclamation, and since 1922, National Fire Prevention Week has been
observed on the Sunday through Saturday period in which October 9 falls.
WHEREAS, The President of the United States has signed a proclamation
pronouncing a national observance during that week every year since 1925.
WHEREAS, Fire Prevention Week 2004 is October 3-9 with the theme "It's Fire
Prevention Week: Test Your Smoke Alarms".
WHEREAS, recognition is due to all members of fire rescue personnel serving in
a variety of roles for their unselfish dedication to Florida's residents and visitors.
NOW THEREFORE, by the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County,
Florida, r do hereby proclaim October 3 through 9, 2004 as
FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

The citizens of Monroe County, Florida, and all citizens are called upon to observe this
week with the appropriate ceremonies and activities.
