WHEREAS, the Hispanic Community of Monroe County wishes to celebrate the 512
years of the discovery of America, remembering their Hispanic Heritage; and
WHEREAS, we wish to celebrate the 512 years of the establishment in America of the
Spanish Language, one of the richest languages of the world; and

WHEREAS, we wish to celebrate, at the same time, the 512 years of the arrival of the
European Culture. religion, costumes, and ideas to the New World; and
WHEREAS, this Celebration takes place in every nation under the banner of the United
Nations, that has recognized the extreme hardships and the obstacles these men went through to
cross over the Atlantic Ocean in three fragile caravels, an enterprise financed by the Spanish
Crown"; and

WHEREAS, we wish to celebrate the voyage made to open up more commercial routes
and ending up being the voyage that discovered "The Most Beautiful Land Human Eyes Have
Ever Seen"; and
WHEREAS, the discovery of America was and still is one of the Greatest Events Ever of
Human History; and
WHEREAS, it Is by direct petition of such distinguiShed citizens of our community as
Jose Cabaleiro, Publisher of the Beacon Newspaper and El' Faro Newspaper of Monroe and
Dade Counties that we remember these events.
NOW, THEREFORE, by the power vested in me as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, I,
Murray E. Nelson, do hereby proclaim the week of October 10th through October 16t1i, 2004
HISPANIC HERITAGE WEEK
in all of Monroe County and urge all residents to bring about such a celebration in a successful
manner, with the preparation and digestion of ethnic, Hispanic-American foods, music, arts and
the exaltation of values, folklore and traditions of the Hispanic community in order to tighten the
bonds of friendship and brotherhood existent between the diverse communities so that we all
could be proud of our own heritage and of our own beautiful, "America I"
