AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Discussion of entering into negotiations with the Monroe County
School District regarding proposed construction of new schools currently in the planning stages
to possibly include the requirements to enable use of the school facilities as hurricane shelters to
improve in-county sheltering opportunities for the citizens of Monroe County.
ITEM BACKGROUND: While seyeral existing schools are utilized as hurricane shelters for
Category 1 & 2 hurricanes; and as Refuges of Last Resort for stronger storms, the County has
an opportunity with the new high schools on the drawing table to work with the District to haye
these facilities designed and built with the equipment and construction features required to
utilize them as full-fledged hurricane shelters. At the recent Hurricane Eyacuation meeting
called by the DCA, Secretary Cohen suggested that a future meeting of the group be deyoted to a
discussion of in-county sheltering issues.
