Unfortunately, Representative Ken Sorensen was unable to attend the conference. After speaking with Representative Sorensen's office and your staff, we have rescheduled and confirmed the presentation to be held at the Monroe County Commission Board Meeting on October 20, 2004 at 1 :00 pm located at the Harvey Government Center, 1200 Truman Avenue, Key West, Florida. We would like for Monroe County Mayor Murray Nelson to present the award on behalf of counties. Enclosed is the award script for Mayor Nelson. If you have any questions or concerns, please give me a call at the FAC office or email meatcbracy@fl-counties.com. HOWEVER, MANY OF THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE SUPPORT OF THE LEGISLATOR WE ARE RECOGNIZING TODAY. ON BEHALF OF THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES, WE ARE PROUD TO HONOR REPRESENTATIVE KEN SORENSON FOR HIS Page 1 of 4 STRONG COMMITMENT TO RESOLVING THE CRITICAL ISSUES AFFECTING COUNTIES THIS PAST SESSION. REPRESENTATIVE KEN SORENSEN REPRESENTS DISTRICT 120, WHICH CONSISTS OF MONROE COUNTY AND PART OF MIAMI- DADE COUNTY. HE WAS ELECTED TO THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE IN 1998 AND HAS BEEN RE-ELECTED SUBSEQUENTLY. REPRESENTATIVE SORENSEN HAS SERVED AS THE CHAIR OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT AND VETERANS AFFAIRS COMMITTEE FROM 2001 TO PRESENT. AS CHAIRMAN, HE HAS WORKED TO PROTECT LOCAL GOVERNMENTS FROM Page 2 of 4 HARMFUL LEGISLATION AND HAS PROVIDED A FORUM TO DISCUSS ISSUES IMPORTANT TO COUNTIES. FOR EXAMPLE, REPRESENTATIVE SORENSEN DEDICATED A COMMITTEE MEETING TO DISCUSS AND DEBATE COUNTY ISSUES REGARDING COMMUNITY REDEVELOPMENT AGENCIES. DURING SESSION, HE WORKED TO MAKE CERTAIN THAT LEGISLATIVE PROPOSALS SUCH AS THE PUBLIC CONSTRUCTION BOND BILL WERE WORKED OUT BETWEEN COUNTIES AND THE INDUSTRY PRIOR TO HEARING THEM IN HIS COMMITTEE. OTHER HARMFUL BILLS FOR COUNTIES, SUCH AS IMPACT FEE CODIFICATION AND THE GOODWILL TIPPING FEE EXEMPTION LEGISLATION, WERE NEVER PLACED ON THE Page 3 of 4 AGENDA IN HIS COMMITTEE AND THUS DIED IN THE LEGISLATIVE PROCESS. FOR HIS UNDERSTANDING OF AND SENSITIVITY TO THE ROLE AND FUNCTIONS OF COUNTIES, FOR HIS LEGISLATIVE WORK TO BOTH CHAMPION AND PROTECT LOCAL GOVERNMENT, AND FOR NEVER FORGETTING THAT HE WAS ONCE A COUNTY COMMISSIONER, THE FLORIDA ASSOCIATION OF COUNTIES IS PLEASED TO HONOR AGAIN REPRESENTATIVE KEN SORENSEN AS A COUNTY CHAMPION. PLEASE JOIN ME IN THANKING REPRESENTATIVE SORENSEN. Page 4 of 4
