WHEREAS, Mario Sanchez, a Key West folk artist and national treasure, well
known fOf bis colorful and intricate woodcarvings depicling Key West street scents,
passed away on April 21. 2005; and
W HF:REAS. Mario Sanchez began his career in art. by selling his anwork in barber
shops, eventually adopted lhe shade of a downtO\VIl sapodi!la tree as his studio, and often
purloined implements from his wife Rosa's k..ilchen to exccute h[s works; and
WHEREAS, Mario Sanchez preserved his memories of a. cutturally diverse
community by peopli ng his street scenes ",ith cigar rollers, street VendNs., fi!'\hermen, and a
variety of other people C{lmrnon to Key West, includi ng Cuban, Afm-Cuban, Bahamian,
Afro-Bahamian, Chrnes.e, Italian and Jewi~h immigrants, onen with a humorous undertone,
and
WHEREAS, Ma.rio Sanchez received a Florida Folk Heritage Award in 199], in
1996 was acclaimed by the national magazine Folk Art as thc most important Cuban-
American Folk Artist of the Twentieth Century, was col1cclcd by top ml..Ls.eum~ around lhe
