AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to conduct Seminar entitled DISABILITY AND
DISASTER, SURVIVING THE FLORIDA KEYS on April 17, 2006 for a cost not to exceed

ITEM BACKGROUND: The Florida Keys Council for People with Disabilities collects two-
thirds of the disabled parking space violation fines collected. The use of this money is restricted
to conducting public awareness programs in the county concerning physically disabled persons.

DISABILITY AND DISASTER;
SURVIVING THE FLORIDA KEYS

Purpose: To learn the difficulties encountered by disabled people during hurricanes and
other disasters in the Florida Keys and to suggest solutions for survival.
Audience: The public(delayed local TV broadcast with subtitles), government,
emergency services and housing providers. The conference is free to attendees.
Speakers: Top level national and regional speakers will do 30-45 min. power point
presentations, answer audience questions and participate in panel discussion. Speakers
will be provided reimbursement for travel and lodging, and an honorarium.
Program Outline
Speaker 1- Tropical Cyclone risks in the next decade in the Florida Keys. (NHC/TPC)
Speaker 2- Evacuation of a resistant disabled population from Monroe County to shelter.
Speaker 3- Disaster Impact on the disabled population of the Florida Keys, Hilary Styron
