Captain Andrea Thompson's career of service to the Monroe County community began in 1999 when
she began volunteering as an EMT with Layton Volunteer Fire Department. Captain Thompson attended
the Joe London Training Academy and successfully obtained her Florida State Firefighter certification in
2000. She was hired with Monroe County Fire Rescue as a Firefighter EMT in July of 2001. Captain
Thompson went on to obtain her Florida State Paramedic certification in 2004 and currently holds a
bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Services administration. She has continuously served as a
Trauma Star flight medic since the inception of the Trauma Star program in 2001. Captain Thompson
was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in March of 2011 and then to Captain in February of 2013. She
spent 5 years in the position of Captain of EMS where she was heavily involved with the success and
growth of the Trauma Star Program and of the Monroe County Fire Rescue EMS Training program.

Currently, Captain Thompson serves as the Fire Rescue Captain assigned to Station 8, located in Stock
Island. Captain Thompson is the president of the International Association of Firefighters, Local 3909,
and the president of the Monroe County Firefighter's Benevolent Association. In her spare time, Andrea
Thompson founded the Florida Keys Drowning Prevention Task Force, a local not for profit organization.
Since 2018, this organization has provided survival swim lessons free of charge to hundreds of local
children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years old and has provided CPR training to many
community members through the "Heroes Among Us" bystander CPR program. y
