AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval for the Key West branch of the Monroe County Public
Library system to close on Saturday, October 30, 2021.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Key West branch of the Monroe County Public Library requests
permission to close for the full day of Saturday October 30, 2021.
The Saturday of Fantasy Fest week in Key West is the peak of the celebration, with many activities
taking place in close proximity to the branch. The exceptional draw of Fantasy Fest produce large
crowds which make it nearly impossible for Library staff to conduct normal operating functions of
the branch (Parking, restrooms,public service,programming, etc). Sheriff's deputies are often
unable to fill security posts at the Library on that day, being assigned elsewhere, and their absence
can compromise the safety and security of Library staff and patrons.
Despite the "official" cancellation of the Saturday Parade, the Key West Police still anticipate a large
number of festival goers and are planning for an additional 80 officers on duty that day,per Chief
Brandenburg.
If closure is approved, Library staff will work a full week from Monday through Friday ensuring no
lost or AD time. This will further assist in providing services during a chaotic week by consolidating
the staff into the Monday-Friday operation.
