A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA. IN RECOGNITION OF THE LATE
ROOSEVELT SANDS, SR.
WHEREAS, Roosevelt Sands Sr., a native and life-long resident of Key West. ~s paissed-eway:at

the age of 96; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sands was the recipient of the Salvation Army Emeritus Award for a lifetime of
dedication to serving the community; and
WH EREAS, Mr. Sands left school in the sixth grade to care for his eight brothers and sisters, and
proceeded to become a self-educated and multi-faceted man; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sands was instrumental in persuading legislators to release money to build the
hospital, then called Florida Keys Memorial, and served on the original board, and the public health
center in Bahama Village bears his name; and
WHEREAS. Mr. Sands was a lover of baseball, and was catcher and Captain for the Key West
Coconuts, an all-black, semi-pro baseball team in the 1930s that played at Fort Zachary Taylor; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sands was a well-known figure about town at his work operating the
diesel/electric disposal machine at the City's old waste disposal plant at Thomas and Amelia Streets
among the many other jobs he held in town over the years; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sands was a member and lay reader at Newman United Methodist Church, a
member of the Douglass School PTA. and worshipful master at the Masonic Lodge 47 at Truman and
Whitehead; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sands and his wife Wilhelmina were deeply in love and raised six children in Key
West; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sands was a prominent and respected member of this community for many,
many years, as the City of Key West and Monroe County grew and developed; and
WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners wishes to recognize the late Roosevelt Sands, Sr.
for his extensive public service and vast dedication to the community; NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA that
Section 1.
The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning
for the passing of the late Roosevelt Sands, Sr. and in recognition of his extensive dedication and vast
public service to the people of Key West and Monroe County, Florida.
Section 2.
The Board hereby requests the Clerk to forward copies of this Resolution to Mr.
Sands' family to express the Board's sorrow.
