A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, IN RECOGNITION OF THE LATE CAPL >~

WHEREAS, Capt. Richard T. Steadman, a native-born Conch who spent most of his Iifa:.,in Key
West after graduating from Key West High School in 1940, passed away at the age' of 75 on ~y 23,
1997; and

WHEREAS, Capt. Steadman served in the U, S, Merchant Marines and the U. S. Navy during World
War II; and
WHEREAS, Capt. Steadman, following in his father's footsteps, became captain of the Western
Union, taking over as master of the cable-repairing ship in 1976 and remaining as captain until the ship
was decommissioned in 1973; and
WHEREAS, following retirement in 1973, Capt. Steadman then became the Fleet Superintendent
for Sea Farms and later began a marine consulting business specializing in court cases requiring expert
testimony in marine navigation; and
WHEREAS, Capt, Steadman founded the Maritime Services of Key West during the 1970s, which
serves as an agent to numerous cruise ships and shipping companies, and remained active in the
business until his death; and
WHEREAS, Capt, Steadman's many contributions to this community included a lifelong
membership at the Old Stone Methodist Church where he served in numerous leadership roles,
including President of the Methodist Men's Club. He was also a member of The Gideons, a charter and
life member of the Key West Propeller Club, and a member 0 f the Key West Maritime Historical Society;
NOW THEREFORE
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA that
Section 1.
The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning
for the passing of the late Capt. Richard Steadman and in recognition of his extensive dedication and
vast pubk service to the people of Key West and Monroe County, Florida. particularly in regard to
matters affecting maritime services in this area.
Section 2.
The Board hereby requests the Clerk to forward copies of this Resolution to Capt.
Steadman's family. to express the Board's sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County. Florida. at a
regular meeting of the Board held on the 18th day of June . 1997.
