MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION
TENNESSEE WILLIAMS DAY
March 26, 2014
WHEREAS, Tennessee Williams, one of the greatest 20th century American
playwrights, lived and worked in Key West, Monroe County, from 1950 until his
death in 1983
WHEREAS, His classics of the American stage earned him two Pulitzer Prizes, a
Tony Award, the Presidential Award of Freedom, and many other literary awards
WHEREAS, His work reached world-wide audiences when his plays were adapted
into motion pictures, winning several academy awards
WHEREAS, One of his major plays, ROSE TATTOO, was written, filmed, and
premiered in Key West, Monroe County
WHEREAS, He was part of the literary movement that resulted in Key West and
the Florida Keys being recognized as the cultural and historical location it is today
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Sylvia J. Murphy, Mayor of Monroe County, do hereby
proclaim March 26, 2014 as
TENNESSEE WILLIAMS DAY
