She presented the Community Voices, Informed Choices program to a national Extension audience. The presentation focused on how to facilitate community forums to encourage diverse views and perspectives. The Southeast Florida Climate Compact held its annual meeting in Key Largo to plan 2022 education, research, and outreach including an update of the Regional Climate Action Plan. Alicia intends to contribute to the Education and Outreach Chapter. Alicia worked with upper keys community groups to teach money matters inflation to 17 senior citizens. We discussed how and where to save on expenses when costs are going up. Alicia worked with three afterschool groups to teach the lifecycle of a plastic bottle to 88 elementary students. The Environmental Horticulture Agent accomplished the following activities: Michelle worked with students from the National Honor Society and Key West Botanical Garden Society on planting an Endangered Plant & Conservation Garden at The Children’s Montessori School in Key West. The garden will be used to foster awareness about the rare and endangered plants in the Florida Keys. 9 Master Gardener Volunteers were docents for spring garden tours for Garden Club of the Upper Keys and Key West Garden Club. Over 1,000 residents and visitors to the Keys attended the different spring garden tours and were given information about the native and ornamental plants that grow in our region. Shelly was listed in the “Who is who is sponge science 2022” in the World Porifera Database, this is an international list of 389 sponge scientists! The Florida Marine Debris working group held its first meeting and Shelly was invited to contribute to the discussion about potential recycling of end-of-life fishing gear in the South Florida, which includes traps, trap line, trap cement, and monofilament fishing line. The functions of this department are implemented by the following offices: The Planning Office is responsible for the administration of the adopted Monroe County Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations. The Department processes amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations. Additionally, the department reviews development proposals for compliance with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations, including community character, growth management provisions and environmental compliance. The Environmental Resources Office services include the review of applications for compliance with environmental regulations, such as: clearing limits, wetland delineation, landscaping, stormwater, land clearing and FEMA required review of potential endangered species impacts under the Permit Referral Process (PRP). The Environmental Restoration Office manages the County’s habitat restoration and improvement projects to enhance and preserve county-owned lands and partners with State and Federal agencies on maintaining conservation lands, specifically covering the removal of invasive exotic species and planting of native species. The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Office develops, maintains, and disseminates geographic data and GIS resources to enhance county functions and provides resources making geographic data available to the public and preparing maps depicting various data. The Marine Resources Office provides a variety of services focusing on protection of the marine environment, the provision of maritime infrastructure, and the preservation of public water access, including: (1) vessel pump- out services are provided throughout unincorporated Monroe County; (2) the removal and disposal of derelict and abandoned vessels that have become an environmental or navigational hazard; and (3) working with FWC funded projects to replace regulatory buoys, channel markers, and other waterway management needs to improve recreational boating access and safety.
