For the purpose of historic preservation, I respectfully request that the County Commission donate it to the Truman Little White House in Key West. The sign will then become part of the permanent collection of the State through the Little White House Collection. I understand the sign has been in storage since the late 1970's at Monroe Countys Public Works facility in Marathon. I have conferred with Patty Ivey, FDOT Maintenance Project Administrator, about the County's request to donate the sign to the Truman Little Whitehouse in Key West. Tile Department has no objection to removing the sign from the current storage facility and relocating it to a Secure location,vherc visitors to that facility will able to enjoy a part of history. I have included your email request, the request from Representative Ron Sounders to the County and the photograph of the sign for reference. Saunders has written the Mayor to inquire about an old FDOT sign in storage at the Marathon Garage, that indicates the Overseas Hwy. — USI was designated the Harry S. Truman Highway back in 1973. For historic preservation purposes, he is requested that the County donate it to the Truman Little White House in Key West. It will then become part of the permanent collection of the State through the Little White House Collection. Please advise as to whether you can still locate the sign and process this as appropriate for proper donation. Please let us know if you need the Mayor's assistance in any way with this matter. An agenda item might be in order for a future meeting, and likely a brief donation ceremony would be in order. I don't know if the LWH has any future events coming up that might be appropriate, but will rely on your discretion on this matter.
