DAY OF MEETING ADD-ON ITEM S-6
BULK ITEM: Yes DEPARTMENT: Public Libraries
TIME APPROXIMATE: STAFF CONTACT: Kimberly Matthews (305) 292-4540

AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to add one (1) new FTE (full time equivalent) 316 Lead
Historian position for the Library Department to assist with the staffing and development of the
Florida Keys History Center
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The Library Department seeks approval to add one (1) FTE position of Lead Historian at the 316
pay grade, which has a pay range of $75,683.22- $121,093.16 to support the Florida Keys
History Center following the tremendous loss and time of transition at the retirement of Tom
Hambright. The Library Department finds itself with a unique opportunity to fill Tom's huge
shoes with two exceptionally qualified candidates. The addition of a second professional
historian and curator will allow for the opportunity to elevate the Florida Keys History Center to
a world-class research facility.
The addition of this position will provide the level of staffing necessary to perform the migration
of our current inventory and cataloging database (housed on an obsolete platform) to modern
technology while addition more detailed accessioning of the collection. This will increase public
access to the catalog and digitized images of the collection, create internal finding aids, allow for
updated disaster preparedness plans, and increased conservation measures. The additional FTE
will allow the FKHC staff time for grant writing initiatives to increase programming Keys-wide,
finance acquisitions of new heritage treasures and replace aging digitization equipment. Lastly,
the team will have adequate time to reinvigorate renovation plans for the center that were
curtailed following Hurricane Irma. This additional position will allow for all of these initiatives
while continuing to provide the open-door research services the community needs and expects.
This position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience and a PhD in history or applicable
field.
