Item N03BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: 7/18/12 (Key West) Division: Growth Management Bulk Item: Yes X No Staff Contact Person: Suzanne Hutton 292-3470 AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval to create a new position of Paralegal (Pay Grade 09) at the Marathon Growth Management Offices and under the Growth Management Budget. ITEM BACKGROUND: Growth Management issues continue to grow in number and legal sophistication. At the Growth Management Division Director's request, the County Attorney has assigned an Assistant County Attorney to work in Marathon on a daily basis, in addition to the attorneys who work periodically in Marathon. The attorneys do not have paralegal support staff located in the Marathon office. The need for a full time paralegal has become apparent as the attorneys often spend time on matters that could be addressed by a paralegal, delaying their ability to address those matters requiring legal review. This position will assist the Division's attorneys through paralegal support. This position will be funded by the Growth Management Division but the paralegal will answer to the County Attorney and the Assistant County Attorneys who represent the Growth Management Division in order to comply with the Rules governing the Florida Bar. The funding will be drawn from Growth Management, with the line item to be identified during the budget process.
