Item M3BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY Meeting Date: July 18, 2012 Division: County Administrator Bulk Item: Yes X No _ Department: Medical Examiner Staff Contact Person/Phone #:Roman Gastesi/x4441 AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Approval of Second Amendment to Agreement for Medical Examiner Services ITEM BACKGROUND: Beginning 3/1/2012, due to a change in office personnel, the Medical Examiner (ME) began using Dean -Lopez and Allen -Beyer funeral homes for body transport. At current funding, the most the ME could offer was $200.00 per transport (he had been paying $165.00 per transport). Two hundred dollars a transport is stretching his budget thin. This is for a trip that usually ranges from 100 to 120 miles and requires two individuals. The ME has been assured by both funeral homes that $200.00 is inadequate to cover their cost. Dean -Lopez Funeral Home has specifically stated that they need $350.00 per trip. Annually, approximately 175 bodies are transported. The difference between $165 and $350 for 175 transports is $32,375.00 (or for a year, a monthly increase of $2,697.92). This is the amount of the increase being requested for fiscal year 2012-2013. The ME is requesting an amendment to his fiscal year 2011-2012 budget to allow him to pay $350 per transport retroactive to June 1, 2012. This would be an increase of $10,791.67 for the current fiscal year. PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: BOCC entered into contract with ME on August 20, 2008, for the period September 1, 2008, through August 31, 2011. Contract was extended by amendment on August 17, 2011, to August 31, 2014. CONTRACT/AGREEMENT CHANGES: Commencing June 1, 2012, the compensation shall be increased to $573,194.88 annually, which is $47,766.24 per month.
