A RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION
OF THE LATE MEL FISHER
WHEREAS, Mel Fisher, affectionately known as King Me!, passed away on De~m~r tC 1~,

WHEREAS. Mel Fisher, one of America's greatest treasure hunters, was born" on" a ~rm~

WHEREAS, after a visit to the Keys and the lure of finding the ruins of Spanish ~~e~vA
his family to the Keys in the 1960s; and r- ~ 1"0 ~

WHEREAS. Mel discovered bits and pieces of the Atocha wreck in the Marquesas, and for 15
years searched for the motherlode; and
WHEREAS, in 1985, the motherlode of the Atocha. with an estimated value between $200 and
$400 million, was found; and
WHEREAS. in 1982, the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Society was founded and dedicated to
the exhibition, archaeology, preservation, research and teaching young people about wrecks and
archaeology concerning Spanish and Colonial maritime activities; and
WHEREAS. Mel Fisher left a legacy of material riches and the wealth of friendships with
everyone he met; now. therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and
mourning for the passing of the late Mel Fisher. a great and warm-hearted man.
Section 2. The Board hereby requests the Clerk to forward copies of this Resolution to his
beloved family to express the Board's sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida. at a
regular meeting of said Board held on the 13th day of January, 1999.
