This time will be used to continue outreach and education efforts to our Spanish speaking residents and visitors regarding our Solid Waste and Recycling Goals,Programs and events. ITEM BACKGROUND: Since 2010 Monroe County Solid Waste/Recycling has partnered with Radio Ritmo in an effort to educate residents and visitors whose first language is Spanish, regarding the county's commitment to recycling, and what materials are accepted by our contractors (haulers). According to the Census Bureau, Monroe County has approximately 18.3% (13,690) of the population whose first language is Spanish, of that group 30.3% (4,148)say that though they speak English,they speak it less than"very well"and prefer to listen to important information in their native language. These figures do not include Spanish speaking individuals who come to Monroe County to work and or visit. Radio Ritmo can be heard from Florida City to the southernmost point in Key West. The station can also be heard over the Internet. Each year during our Hazardous Waste Collection events staff has been able to gauge the impact of advertising on this station by theincreased participation of non-English speaking residents in the events, especially from the area of Stock Island and Marathon. Staff continues to receive phone calls from residents asking for more information about recycling and what materials to recycle. When the Trim Notices are mailed out we receive dozens of phone calls from Spanish speaking listeners who own property in Monroe County and want to ask questions about their taxes and services. We also receive calls from parents after their child comes home and shares what he/she has learned in our school presentations. Further, Radio Ritmo is instrumental in spreading the word to residents and visitors about hurricane safety information, water quality warnings, and Health Dept. warnings. In the spirit of partnership the station is offering 12 months (10/1/13 to 9/30/14) radio time for the price of 10 months. The Solid Waste Department also buys time on US 1 Radio and Pirate Radio.
