AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Presentation of Mayor's Proclamation declaring the week of
May 20— 26, 2012 as"Emergency Medical Services Week" in Monroe County.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The residents and visitors of Monroe County, and the State of Florida,
benefit daily from the efforts of skilled dispatchers, firefighters, firefighter-EMT's, firefighter
paramedics, emergency and trauma nurses, educators, emergency and trauma physicians and support
personnel.
PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: This is an annual proclamation requested by Monroe
County Emergency Services Division.

Mayor's Proclamation
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK
May 20 — 26, 2012
WHEREAS,emergency medical services is a vital public service; and
WHEREAS, the members of emergency medical services teams are ready to
provide lifesaving care to those in need 24 hours a day, seven days a week; and
WHEREAS, access to quality emergency care dramatically improves the survival
and recovery rate of those who experience sudden illness or injury; and
WHEREAS,the emergency medical services system consists of firefighters,
firefighter-EMTs, firefighter-paramedics, emergency and trauma nurses, dispatchers,
educators, emergency and trauma physicians and support personnel; and
WHEREAS, the members of emergency medical services teams, whether career
or volunteer, engage in thousands of hours of specialized training and continuing
education to enhance their lifesaving skills; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to recognize the value and the accomplishments of
emergency medical services providers by designating Emergency Medical Services
Week; now
THEREFORE, as the mayor of Monroe County, Florida in recognition of this
event from May 20 through 26, 2012, do hereby proclaim this to be
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES WEEK
with the theme, EMS: More Than A Job A Calling.", and Wednesday, May 23`d is
Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day. I encourage the community to
observe this week with appropriate programs, ceremonies and activities.

EMS Week/EMSC Day 2012
The Florida EMS for Children (EMSC) program would like to partner with your EMS agency to promote National EMS
Week and EMS Day 2012. This year, National EMS Week 2012 is May 20-May 26.
Wednesday, May 23 is Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Day. This year's theme is "EMS: More Than A
Job. A Calling."
Florida EMSC has ordered a limited number of supplies to create EMSC Day goody bags that are geared towards children
in grades K-2, These resources will be distributed to EMS agencies that are planning activities and events relating to
EMS Week and/or EMSC Day for distribution to children in their local area. The bags and supplies will be distributed on
a first-come, first-serve basis to requesting agencies.
For more information,or to make a request for goody bags, please contact Melissa Keahey, EMSC Program and Planning
Manager and provide detailed information about the type of activity or event your agency will be hosting and how many
bags you would be able to distribute to children in grades K-2.
