AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Mayor's Proclamation in recognition of our Monroe County
Firefighter/paramedics, Firefighter/EMTs, and the National Fire Protection Association, declare
October 9-15, 2022 as Fire Prevention Week in Monroe County.
ITEM BACKGROUND: The Board of Monroe County Commissioners are committed to ensuring
the safety and security of those living in and visiting Monroe County. Our Monroe County Fire
Chief, Steve Hudson, and our firefighter/paramedics and firefighter/EMTs are dedicated to reducing
the occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education.

WHEREAS, Monroe County, Florida is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all
those living in and visiting Monroe County; and
WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are
the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS, according to the National Fire Protection Association° (NFPA°), the top causes of Q
home fires are cooking, heating, electrical, smoking and candles; and
WHEREAS, smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger in the
event of fire in which you may have as little as 2 minutes to escape safely; and 2
WHEREAS, residents should be sure everyone in the home understands the sounds of the
alarms and knows how to respond; and
WHEREAS, residents who are responsive to public education measures are better able to take
personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; and g
WHEREAS, Monroe County's Fire Chief and firefighters are dedicated to reducing the
occurrence of home fires and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education;

WHEREAS, the 2022 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Fire Won't Wait, Plan Your Escape TM " Q
effectively serves to remind us to plan ahead and make sure everyone living in your home
knows what to do and where to go if there is a fire,
NOW THEREFORE, I, David Rice, Mayor of Monroe County, Florida do hereby proclaim
October 9-15, 2022, as
Fire Prevention Week
throughout this County, and I urge all the people of Monroe County to be aware of their
surroundings, look for available ways out in the event of a fire or other emergency, respond
when the smoke alarm sounds by exiting the building immediately, and to support the many
public safety activities and efforts of the County's fire and emergency services during Fire
Prevention Week 2022.
