ITEM BACKGROUND: The Miami Diaper Bank of Miami, FL as a member of the national
diaper bank network, works to actively raise awareness and addressing diaper needs for families
throughout South Florida, including Monroe County.

National Diaper Need Awareness Week
Whereas,diaper need, the condition of not having a sufficient supply of clean diapers to keep babies and
toddlers clean, dry, and healthy, can adversely affect the health and well-being of babies, toddlers, and U)
their families; and national surveys and research studies report that one in three families struggles with
diaper need and 48 percent of families delay changing a diaper to extend the available supply; and

Whereas,purchasing enough diapers to keep a baby or toddler clean, dry, and healthy can consume 14
percent of a low-wage family's post-tax income, making it difficult to provide the necessary supply; and 0

Whereas, a daily or weekly supply of diapers is generally an eligibility requirement for babies and C
toddlers to participate in child care programs and quality early-education programs that enable children to
thrive and parents to work; and
Whereas,without enough diapers,babies and toddlers risk infections and health problems that may E
require medical attention resulting in medical costs, and parents may be prevented from accessing child
care needed to go to work or school,thereby destabilizing the family's economic prospects and well-
being; and

Whereas,the people of Monroe County recognize that diaper need is a public health issue, and addressing P.
diaper need can lead to economic opportunity for the state's families and communities and improved �
health for children,thus ensuring all children and families have access to the basic necessities required to �

Whereas,Miami-Diaper Bank has become a vital resource for organizations in our community who serve
children and families with diaper needs, Connect over 5.2 million diapers and baby essentials to 80,000 CN

children and families who are homeless,in crisis, living in poverty, struggling to secure affordable
childcare,in response to emergency need, and when national crisis or natural disaster strikes; and

donors, for their courageous service during the crisis, and encourage the citizens of Monroe County to

Florida to request that you proclaim September 24th through October 2nd, 2022 as
Diaper Need Awareness Week in Miami, Florida, Your proclamation would be, used in
conjunction with other states and local governments around the United States to inform z
our community that there are families who cannot afford diapers for their children and
diaper banks across the country that are helping families obtain the diiapers they need. T
Miami Diaper Bank is a member of the National Diaper Bank Network, which has been z
actively raising awareness and addressing diaper needs across the country. The E

National Diaper Bank supportsa network of over two hundred active diaper banks

which support diaper distribution programs located in nearly every state in the 'United
States. Along with the National Diaper Bank Network, individual diaper banks across the country will hold, events and work with their local and state governments to raise
awareness of this need and the good work that diaper banks do to help parents obtain
this basic necessity for their children,
