AGENDA ITEM WORDING: Attorney-Client Closed Session in the matter of Laura Goodman v.
Monroe County, Florida, Case No. 21-cv-10099, to be held at the regularly scheduled BOCC
meeting on October 19, 2022 at 1:30 p.m. in Marathon, Florida, or as soon thereafter as may be
heard.
ITEM BACKGROUND: Per F.S. 286.011(8), the subject matter of the meeting shall be confined
to settlement negotiations or strategy sessions related to litigation expenditures. Present at the
meeting will be the Commissioners; County Administrator Roman Gastesi; County Attorney Bob
Shillinger; Senior Assistant County Attorney Cynthia Hall; outside counsel Bruce Johnson, Chris
Stearns and/or Jonathon Railey from the law firm of Johnson, Anselmo, Murdoch, Piper &
Hochman, P.A.; and a certified court reporter.

Mayor's Script for the Day of the Closed Session
The following should be read at the appropriate point during the day of the closed session.
1. Prior to going into closed session:
A closed attorney-client session pursuant to Section 286.011(8), Florida Statutes,will now
be held. It is estimated that this meeting will take approximately thirty (30)minutes. The persons
to be in attendance at this closed meeting will be the County Commissioners, County
Administrator Roman Gastesi, County Attorney Bob Shillinger, Assistant County Attorney 0
Cynthia Hall, attorneys Chris Stearns, Bruce Johnson, and/or Jonathon Railey from the law firm
of Johnson, Anselmo, Murdoch, Burke, Piper& Hochman, P.A., and a certified court reporter.

I now call this closed session to order. For the record, this meeting is being held upon the
request of the County Attorney, Bob Shillinger, who announced at a prior meeting held on
September 21, 2022, that he needed advice in the matter of Laura Goodman v. Monroe County,
Case No.: 21-cv-11009 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. At that
meeting, the Board approved holding a closed session at the October 19, 2022 regular meeting 0
and public notice was given through publication of the 10/19/2022 BOCC meeting agenda on
