ITEM BACKGROUND: Africans and Bahamians immigrated to the Florida Keys, freed slaves from ships docked in the Key West harbor and slaves liberated after the 1865 signing of the Emancipation Proclamation made the Keys their home and created a community which contributed to the vitality of the Florida Keys.
