1) Detailed project summary
Enhancement of the Key West Palm Garden is the main objective of this grant
application. Ground cover and low shrubbery is needed to add color, attract
butterflies, and protect from soil erosion and water evaporation.
A secondary objective of the grant would be the restoration of Sable Palmettos.
The original cluster of Sable Palmettos had to be removed following Hurricanes
Georges and Irene. These palms would be restored with similar species.
The plants proposed for the enhancement of the Palm Garden are: Gaillardia,
Hamelia, Stacytarpheta, and Borrichia. These plants are recommended for their
hardiness in the Florida Keys, a lack of thorns, their low watering needs, and
butterfly attraction qualities. The lost Sable Palmettos would be replaced and
Silver Saw Palmettos added.
Community participation is an important element of this grant. The Monroe
County Extension Services staff, the Master Gardener's Class and the Key West
Garden Club have pledged their labor and expertise in the planning and
installation of these Palm Garden enhancements. The involvement of these
groups also provides strong public relations for the garden.
Restoration of the Palm Garden would be widely promoted, mainly through print
media. Local newspapers would be provided color photographs of the
improvements along with a description of the restoration. Area gardening clubs
have well-distributed newsletters that would also receive press releases and
photographs. The Friends of the Library conduct a lecture series that could
include speakers on native plants and palms. Information packets on the Palm
Garden restoration would be sent to schools in the area, with field trips highly
encouraged.

2) Detailed description of project location site, including address and county,
The Palm Garden is located in Monroe County at 700 Fleming Street, Key West.
It is adjacent to the Public Library, the oldest library in South Florida, and is
public, County property. The Palm Garden is free and open to the public.
The Palm Garden was established through a gift from the Rath Foundation in
1994. The Palm Garden is approximately 7,990 square feet. The plantings
consist of imported and native palms, mature trees, and native shrubbery. The
garden includes a courtyard of Chicago brick, wrought iron park benches, coral
rock formations and a fountain. The trees and palms are identified with
permanent brass markers donated by the Friends of the Key West Library. Tree
identification serves as an educational tool for visitors' curious about this unique
collection of tropical plants. Palm Garden visitors then consult the Library's
extensive Florida gardening book collection to find out more about their favorite
plants.
The Palm Garden is well utilized by local residents and visitors to Key West. It is
one of very few public green spaces within the high-density, "Old Town" historic
district of Key West. Employees working in the area, library patrons, and
neighbors know the Palm Garden as a peaceful stop for lunch or conversation.
Friends of the Library book sales are held in the courtyard. Pre-school and
elementary school students who visit the Palm Garden find the Old Man palm
and Cardboard palms particularly fascinating. The Palm Garden is a landmark on
the Conch Tour Train and Old Town Trolley tours that pass by-tourists then
return to the garden on foot to explore it in-depth. Occasionally, impromptu
wedding ceremonies and photography sessions are held in the garden.
