· Award of Florida Emergency Medical Services County Grant for the
continuing enhancement of the emergency services' radio communications
system and for the purchase of Automatic External Defibrillators (AED).
Monroe County applied for and was awarded an Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) County Grant in the amount of $46,367. These new funds will be added to
those already existing from previous EMS County Grants and used to complete
the second phase of the emergency services' radio communications system and
for the purchase of twenty (20) Automatic External Defibrillators. These grants
provide 100% funding of the projects, therefore a local match is not required.
Previously, Monroe County applied through the Florida EMS competitive grant
program and was awarded a grant that funded the purchase, training and
placement of AED devices in several Monroe County Sheriff s Department patrol
units, including one for the City of Key Colony Beach Police Department. In
studies conducted by the American Heart Association and others, early
defibrillation has been proven to increase the incidence of successful resuscitation
of victims of sudden cardiac arrest. In an effort to expand the availability of AED
devices throughout the Florida Keys, the following agencies are being proposed to
participate and receive them.

of Emergency Medical Services in December, 1999. These inspections are very
extensive and include review and inspection of the service's administrative,
operational and personnel records, medical standing orders and treatment
protocols, trauma transport protocols, and equipment and vehicles.

County Fire Academy.
The second Firefighter Minimum Standards Course at the Monroe County Fire
