RESOLUTION NO. 246-1999
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMIS-
SIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, DECLARING
MONROE COUNTY'S OPEN AND ACCEPTING USE OF THE
SPANISH LANGUAGE.
WHEREAS, Monroe County has a substantial segment of its population which is
bilingual or speaks Spanish only; and
WHEREAS, in recent months, neighboring communities have had some controversy over
the use of Spanish in official transactions; and
WHEREAS, Monroe County encourages all of its officers to facilitate Spanish speakers
in their interactions with governmental entities;
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF
MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The use of Spanish in Monroe County is both welcomed and accepted and
Monroe County is "user friendly" to Spanish speaking individuals and hereby promulgates this
Resolution for the purpose of demonstrating its open and accepting use of the Spanish language
in all of its facets of government.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Board is hereby directed to forward a certified copy of
this Resolution to: Arturo Espinola, Latin Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 629, Key West,
Florida 33040.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County,
Florida, at a regular meeting ofthe Board held on the 9th day of Jun~ 1999.
