RESOLUTION NO. 452

WHEREAS, the Florida Keys resources and economy have suffered significantly due to Hurricane
Georges; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Keys economy relies heavily on tourists who visit the Florida Keys during the
months from late fall to early spring; and
WHEREAS, cultural institutions such as East Martello, Pigeon Key and Old City Hall IKey West)
suffered hurricane damage to their facilities; and
WHEREAS, artists, many of whom operate and own small businesses, have lost work and/or
display space, living quarters and inventory of both finished products and of materials and tools; and
WHEREAS, FEMA and insurance will cover only a portion of the losses to the cultural institutions
and artists; and
WHEREAS, the losses sustained by the hurricane will negatively affect the revenues which would
have been earned during the coming tourist season; and
WHEREAS, cultural institutions and individual artists are important contributors to the heritage and
economy of the Florida Keys; and
WHEREAS, the Monroe Council of the Arts Corp. IMCACA) is conducting an assessment of the
impact of Hurricane Georges on cultural institutions and individual artists; and
WHEREAS, MCAC has been designated by the BOCC as the Local Arts Agency, now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. Monroe County requests that a portion of any disaster assistaiie tf.0n.h~
may be allocated by the Florida State Legislature be designated for assistanc~~~e .z.tJlh~1
