A RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF THE
DANNY L. I{OLHAGf:lATE PURIEGTON "PURIE" HOWANITZ

w~~MO~~i~dtb~~'Purie" Howanitz passed away on July 16,1999, at the age of 76; and

WHEREAS, "Purie" as he was known was a proud Conch who loved his island home; and
WHEREAS, "Purie" retired from the City of Key West as director of Public Works in March of
1998. He served in that capacity with fervor and zeal; and
WHEREAS, "Purie" also served as an extraordinary Monroe County Commissioner, and
County Mayor during his elected four-year term of office from 1974-1978; and
WHEREAS, "Purie" Howanitz's opinions and experiences were sought after by many
community leaders with fervor; and
WHEREAS, "Purie" leaves his beloved wife of 56 years, Geraldine "Gerry" Howanitz, six
children, their spouses, 14 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren and many, many friends to
cherish his memory; and the love and pride in which he held his wife, children, and grandchildren was
so great, now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning
for the passing of the late Puriegton "Purie" Howanitz, and in recognition of his extensive dedication
and vast public service to the people of Key West and Monroe County, Florida.
Section 2. The Board hereby requests the Mayor to forward copies of this Resolution to his
beloved wife, Geraldine "Gerry" Howanitz and his children to express the Board's sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida,
at a regular meeting of said Board held on the 11th day of August, 1999.
