M ON CLK. CIR. CT. LATE EDNA MADELINE VALDEZ HOWARD
, ROE COUNTY. FLA.
WHEREAS, Edna Madeline Valdez Howard, passed away on July 13, 1999, at the age of 100;

and
WHEREAS, Edna Madeline Valdez Howard was the matriarch of one of Key West's largest
and oldest Conch families; and
WHEREAS, Edna Madeline Valdez Howard known as "Miss Edna" or "Mother" began her day
at 5:00 AM washing the family clothes on a washboard, and making sure her children always went to
church and school in starched, ironed clothes; and
WHEREAS, "Miss Edna" was known around Bahama Village for her peppermint candy, pound
cake and fudge that she made; and
WHEREAS, "Miss Edna" had two husbands, Alexander Valdez, a cigar maker, and Ralph
Howard, a dry cleaner. She had nine children, five of whom are still living. She is also survived by 22
grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, "Miss Edna" leaves her loving family members and many, many friends to cherish
her memory; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE
COUNTY, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The Board hereby adopts this Resolution as evidence of its regret and mourning
for the passing of the late Edna Madeline Valdez Howard.
Section 2. The Board hereby requests the Mayor to forward copies of this Resolution to
her beloved family to express the Board's sorrow.
PASSED AND ADOPTED by the Board of County Commissioners of Monroe County, Florida,
at aregular.~eeting of said Board held on the 11th day of August, 1999.
