Selection of a recommended member on the Sanctuary Advisory Cormnittee to fill the local elected
official and alternate local elected official slots.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary has a National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Council which
includes members from a variety of sectors in the connnunity. For approximately the past four years.
Cormnissioner Neugent has been a member of the Council and Chairman for the past three years. The
Board of County Cormnissioner in the past has considered reconnnendations for local elected official
membership on the Council.

Dear Friend of the Florida Keys:
We need several new representatives for the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary
Advisory Council. Beginning immediately, we will accept applications for all the seats
on the attached list, both full members and alternates. The application period for these
seats closes on September 30 at 5.00 p.m.
Enclosed is the Sanctuary Advisory Council application. The Council term for these
seats is three years. Please be sure to answer each question, taking into account the
criteria that we will use to determine who will fill the seats. The criteria include:
. Is the applicant a resident of Monroe or Dade County?
. Has the applicant demonstrated the ability to have a cooperative working
relationship with others?
. Does the applicant have community and professional affiliations which would
facilitate the exchange of information between the public and the Sanctuary?
. Has the applicant expressed a positive philosophy regarding the conservation of
marine resources?
We are looking forward to receiving applications in our Marathon office by September
30,2003. Applications will be reviewed by a panel consisting of representatives from the
Governor's Office, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Monroe County
and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. Dan Basta, Director of the National
Marine Sanctuary Program will make final selections and appointments. The three year
terms will begin upon appointment.
The Advisory Council meets every other month on the third Tuesday in Marathon at the
Garden Club, unless otherwise stated.
