The Environmental Horticulture Agent accomplished the following activities: • Michelle partnered with SOS Foundations nutrition program and spoke to two fifth grade classes at Poinciana Elementary School on the history of agriculture in the Keys and breadfruit production at Grimal Grove. Breadfruit trees are being planted worldwide as a way to combat food insecurity and climate change. 38 students participated. • The Environmental Horticulture Program and The Islamorada Foundation hosted a butterfly gardening program and unveiled the new demonstration garden located a J. Gilbert Reese Park in Islamorada. The park features many Florida Keys native plants. The garden was planted and is maintained by Master Gardener Volunteers. Packet Pg. 1562 0.1.a The Florida Sea Grant Marine Extension Agent accomplished the following activities: • Shelly and the amazing planning team from the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program, Coral Restoration Foundation, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, FDEP, and FWC taught 31 registrants from the United States, Caribbean, and Europe during the virtual Reef Futures Coral Communication Session: Building a Community of Practice. This is the first step to create an international Coral Restoration Consortium communication working group to promote collaboration and best practices to support the dissemination of science-based information focused on coral reef conservation worldwide. The second workshop will be held on December 14 in the evening to accommodate our Pacific Ocean partners. • Shelly was elected the chair of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council Coral Advisory Panel. Shelly led the group discussion for recommendations to the Council regarding the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Restoration Blueprint and approved 6 motions for consideration at the Council's next meeting. 0 • Shelly spoke on US] Radio Morning Magazine about king tides. The final king tides for 2022 will be during the new moon from November 22-26, 2022. The average difference 21 between high tides and low tides in the Florida Keys, especially oceanside, is around 1.5 feet. During these extreme high tides that occur in the Fall around the full and new 0 moons, the water level difference between low tides and high tides can be almost 3 feet twice a day, at approximately 6 hour intervals. The functions of this department are implemented by the following offices: The Planning Office is responsible for the administration of the adopted Monroe County Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations. The Department processes amendments to the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations. Additionally, the department reviews development proposals for compliance with the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations, including community character, growth management provisions and environmental compliance. The Environmental Resources Office services include the review of applications for compliance with 00. environmental regulations, such as: clearing limits, wetland delineation, landscaping, storm water, land clearing Wo and FEMA required review of potential endangered species impacts under the Permit Referral Process (PRP). 21 0 The Environmental Restoration Office manages the County's habitat restoration and improvement projects to enhance and preserve county-owned lands and partners with State and Federal agencies on maintaining U conservation lands, specifically covering the removal of invasive exotic species and planting of native species. 1� 0 0. 0 The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Office develops, maintains, and disseminates geographic data W and GIS resources to enhance county functions and provides resources making geographic data available to the a public and preparing maps depicting various data. 0 V_ o The Marine Resources Office provides a variety of services focusing on protection of the marine environment, < the provision of maritime infrastructure, and the preservation of public water access, including: (1)vessel pump Zj - out services are provided throughout unincorporated Monroe County; (2)the removal and disposal of derelict and abandoned vessels that have become an environmental or navigational hazard; and(3)working with FWC funded projects to replace regulatory buoys, channel markers, and other waterway management needs to improve recreational boating access and safety. Limited applications were accepted after that date.
