AGENDA ITEM WORDING:
Approval requesting a letter from the Mayor to the Dept. of Environmental Protection,
Secretary Struhs expressing support of The Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary Advisory
Council's outrage of the dumping of effluent from Piney Point phosphate fadlity into the
Gulf of Mexico.
ITEM BACKGROUND:
The FKNMS SAC requests FDEP to provide a detailed explanation as to why it has not
proceeded to implement alternatives to discharging treated Piney Point wastewater into
the Gulf of Mexico or Tampa Bay, including but not limited to, indneration, storage for
processing, or land application on salt tolerant vegetation, or a combination thereof,
before the expiration of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA ocean dumping
permit.
Finally, the SAC requests FDEP provide an explanation of what steps will be taken to
provide for the disposal of the remaining 800 million gallons of wastewater at that site in
the future.
