ITEM BACKGROUND: The Key Largo Fire Rescue & Emergency Medical Services District (hereinafter the "District" or"KLFEMS")was created in 2005 by act of the Legislature. The District provides fire protection, firefighting services, rescue services and emergency medical services for all of Cross Key and that part of Key Largo from South Bay Harbor Drive and Lobster Lane to the southern boundary of the right-of-way County Roads 905 and 905A. On November 8, 2022, KLFEMS District voters approved, with 63.14%, of vote a referendum allowing additional tax capacity, attesting to the support of local residents for the KLFEMS District's continued existence. Recently the Legislature has dissolved the special taxing district of Reedy Creek under House Bill 9B and is looking into dissolving or further controlling others special districts. The resolution urges the Legislature to respect the will of the voters of Key Largo who have expressed their confidence in the District. The resolution also expresses the BOCC's support for the continued existence of the District. A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF MONROE COUNTY, FLORIDA, EXPRESSING THE BOARD'S SUPPORT FOR THE KEY LARGO FIRE & EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES DISTRICT BY CALLING ON THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE TO RESPECT THE WILL OF KEY LARGO VOTERS BY LEAVING THE DISTRICT INTACT AS AN INDEPENDENT SPECIAL DISTRICT.
