ITEM BACKGROUND: The Purple Heart is awarded to military and civilian members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who were killed in action or die from wounds received in action. PREVIOUS RELEVANT BOCC ACTION: CONTRACTIAGREEMENT CHANGES: STAFF RECOMMENDATIONS: TOTAL COST: INDIRECT COST: BUDGETED: Yes No DIFFERENTIAL OF LOCAL PREFERENCE: COST TO COUNTY: SOURCE OF FUNDS: REVENUE PRODUCING: Yes No AMOUNT PER MONTH Year APPROVED BY: County Atty , OMB/Purchasing Risk Management DOCUMENTATION: Included XX Not Required DISPOSITION: AGENDA ITEM # Revised 7/09 PURPLE HEART RECOGNITION DAY WHEREAS, the Purple Heart, originally known as the Military Badge of Merit, is an American combat decoration, the oldest military decoration in the world in present use; WHEREAS, the Purple Heart was established by General George Washington at Newburgh, New York, on August 7, 1782, during the Revolutionary War, as an incentive to the Continental Army; and WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is awarded to military and civilian members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war in the hands of the enemy and posthumously to the next of kin in the name of those who were killed in action or die from wounds received in action; and WHEREAS, the organization known as the Military Order of the Purple Heart, which is the only Congressionally chartered veterans' organization exclusively for combat wounded veterans, was formed eighty years ago in 1932 for the protection and mutual interest of Purple Heart recipients. WHEREAS, in gratitude for their service and sacrifices made in the preservation of national interests of the United States of America at home and abroad; and WHEREAS, Monroe County is honored to recognize all military members who have or are currently serving from Monroe County and the State of Florida, and are proud to proclaim this day as tribute to the those brave service members who have received the Purple Heart. NOW, THEREFORE, I, David Rice, as Mayor of Monroe County, Florida, do hereby declare proclaim August 7, 2012 as "Purple Heart Recognition Day" in Monroe County, Florida, and in doing so, pays tribute to all recipients of the Purple Heart for their extraordinary sacrifice and gallantry on the field of battle.
