Meeting Date: May 16. 2006 Bulk Item: Yes ~ No ITEM BACKGROUND: To preserve workforce and affordable housings steps must be taken by the County. There exists today a need for 7,317 units of affbrdable housing. To put that number in perspective, under the rate of growth ordinance, it would take 28 years to achieve a balance of affordable housing in the County jf all 255 annual building permits were developed as affordable housing. See attached Memo for additional statistics. Nicholas dated 12/] 9/05 regarding Housing Prices in Monroe County; Affordability for Median Income Residents In 2002, there were 13,341 households renting in Monroe County. Of those, 5,051 or 37.9% were cost burdened. To display the extent of their cost burden, the following chart displays the percent of households paying unaffordable housing costs per area median income for the year 2004. The Monroe County Planning Department has issued 430 affordable housing allocations since the beginning ofROGO or 1992. According to the Monroe County Housing Authority, as of August 2005 there are approximately 550 people on a waiting list for housing in both incorporated and unincorporated Monroe County.
